            The human body is like a machine. It needs fuel to do work. Nutrients are fuel for the body. They are chemical subtances in foods that the body needs for growth and nergy. The body uses nutrients to carry out life processes. There are five kinds of nutrients– carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Some food are rich in one nutrient. Most food contain many nutrients.

            A balanced diet is especially important to atletes. Athletic activities are hard work. An athlete’s body burns fuel rapidly. It requires a greater supply of fuel than does a person who is not an athlete. Eating health foods increases an athlet’s power and endurance. Healthful eating helps an athlete manage weight and protect him from injuries.

            Most nutrition experts say that an athlete’s diet should be high in carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are nutrients that supply the body with energy. They also help build muscle. Starches such as bread and pasta are carbohydrates. They fuel the body with energy over a long period of time. Sixty to 70 percent of the food an athlete eats should be high in carbohydrates.

            Water is also important to athletes. More than two-thirds of the human body is made up of water. People lose some of that liquid when they sweat. Athletes must replace the lost fluid. Drinking a liter of water before each competition helps maintain the necessary water balance.

            Regardless of the sport, every athlete should eat a meal three or four hours before competing. Fueling the body on carbohydrates, such as cereal, bread, and pasta, is important. The meal should include fruits and vegetable too. They suply the body with important minerals and add carbohydrates.

            Athletes should avoid sugary foods, such as candy and soft drinks. Although they can give a quick energy “boost” these foods also cause a subsequent energy “drop”.             A Spanish researcher and a Paraguayan scientist have presented the most complete and detailed European study into the repertoire of sounds used by bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) to communicate. The study reveals the complexity and our lack of understanding about the communication of these marine mammals.

            Until now, the scientific community had thought that whistles were the sounds made by these mammals, and were unaware of the importance and use of burst-pulsed sounds. Researchers from the Bottlenose Dolphin Research Institute (BDRI), based in Sardinia (Italy) have now shown that these sounds are vital to the animals’ social life and mirror their behaviour.

            “Burst-pulsed sounds re used in the life of bottlenose dolphins to socialized and maintain their position in the social hierarchy in order to prevent physical conflict, and this also represents a significant energy saving,” Bruno Diaz, lead author of the study and researcher at the BDRI, which he also manage, said.

            According to the experts, the tonal whistle sounds (the most melodious ones) allows dolphins to stay in contact with each other (above all mothers and offspring), and to coordinate hunting strategies. The burst-pulsed souds (which are more complex and varied than the whistles) are used “to avoid physical aggression in situations of high excitement, such as when they are competing for the same piece of food, for example,” explains Diaz. According to Diaz, bottlenose dolphins make longer burst-pulsed sounds when they are hunting and at times of high aggression: “These are what can be heard best and over the longest period of time,” and make it possible for each individual to maintain its position in the hierarchy.

            The dolpins emit these strident sounds when in the presence of other individuals moving towards the same prey. The “least dominant” one soon moves away in order to avoid confrontation. “The surprising thing about these sounds is that they have a high level of uni-directionally, unlike human sounds. One dolphin can send a sound to another that is sees as a competitor, and this one clearly knows it is being addressed,” explains the Spanish scientist.

Due to the cases of Salmonella food poisoning in Europe, the sale of duck eggs reached its lowest point in the 1970’s. Although it was never conclusively shown that duck eggs were to blame, the egg-eating public stopped buying and many egg producers went bankrupt.
